Why is this called the Chess Heroes project? Here’s your answer.
To be a true hero you need three things.
- You need courage. For example you’d rather play stronger opponents because you’ll learn something when they beat you. You’d rather play on than accept your opponent’s draw offer, because, whatever the result, you’ll learn from it.
- You want to excel at what you do. You’re not just playing chess for fun: you realise that real fun is about taking the game seriously and trying to play as well as you can in the time you have available.
- You’re a good person, displaying empathy and compassion, and caring for the environment. As a chess player you’ll play fair, you won’t distract others, you’ll display good etiquette at all times, you’ll be a valuable and valued member of your club community.
A Chess Heroes club will promote all three of these values for all its members at all times.
You can be a Chess Hero by playing well, but it’s not the only way a chess enthusiast can be a hero. Some chess heroes are administators, organisers or teachers, for example: because they enjoy chess themselves they’re using their time to put something back into the chess community.
